Enter the void and explore, what you see. Come into the 2 x 2 x 2 m box and pick up the vive tracker. Enjoy the immersive projection all around you. The tracker will be your representation in the world you see. You can choose between four different levels. Each level focuses on a different type of movement, from very fast pacing to careful movement. You decide how fast you want to go.

IDEAS & GOALS

  • EXPERIMENTAL The project should explore something unseen and bring forward new learnings and options.
  • EXPERIENCE FIRST The player should be completely stunned by a unique setup and experience.
  • EXPLORING MOVEMENT The project should feature a range of different movement-types

8 CUBIC METERS, FRAMED BY A SEAMLESS CANVAS

The wooden construction is 2m x 2m x 2m large cube, which is covered on four sides with a thin canvas. The linkage (the suspension of the ceiling projector) consists of scaffolding poles with clamps and various connecting pieces. Both our professors and a engineer helped us with the construction planning to ensure the safety of the construction. The wood is professional construction wood (laminated veneer lumber), which hardly warps. A special feature is the covering of the edges, which is done seamlessly. It took three days to assemble the cube in total.

CONCEPT BEHIND THE FOUR LEVEL

Each level is characterized by different types of movement. In the STUCK level, the player learns the basic movement by moving the controller together with a target surface. In ORIENTATION, the player learns how the movement of the tracker controls his or her own movement in space. MANDALA primarily plays with the perception of perspective of the player. RABBITHOLE turns up the speed and the focus of movement is skill and pacing of your actions. The player receives feedback directly and intuitively from what he sees and hears. We decided to design four experiences instead of just one because the decision for one experience would not have been representative of the setup.

RABBITHOLE – FAST AND SKILLED

The Rabbithole is a speed ride through a winding tunnel system. The player intuitively walks with the tunnel while trying not to collide with obstacles or shoot off the track at high speed. The focus is on speed and skill. Unlike in VR, for example, speed is well tolerated in the box setup (no motion sickness, no dizziness) and turned out to be really fun. The level is divided into 3 sections, speed, relaxation (free floating) and again speed. The change ensures a short rest and then renewed action. The guidance takes place on the one hand through the specified tunnel, which is limited by colliders, in the section with free movement the player sees a snitch that shows him the way to the goal. The world of colors is based on Alice in Wonderland.
